Five myths about Podman’s 2026 rootless containers debunked
Migrating a 200-engineer organization from Docker Desktop to Podman saves $57,600 annually. Testing shows Podman's rootless security effectively contains exploits like CVE-2026-31431, while pasta networking provides competitive performance for containerized workloads.
The cost of Docker Desktop for a 200-engineer organization reaches $57,600 every year. This expense triggered a large migration wave in 2024. My team migrated six production Linux hosts to Podman in four engineer-days. Most of our Dockerfiles worked without any changes. We used the alias docker=podman to cover 90% of our muscle memory on the servers.
The migration cost is low.
Security and Networking Realities
I tested the Copy Fail exploit (CVE-2026-31431) to check Podman security. When I ran the Copy Fail exploit inside a rootless container, the container root escaped to a user ID that mapped directly to my unprivileged host user, which prevented any damage to the underlying system files. This mapping prevents the exploit from accessing host files. The kernel rejected the privilege escalation at the user namespace boundary. The blast radius remained limited to the unprivileged user.
Podman 5 uses pasta for networking. It replaced the old CNI plugins with Netavark, and Aardvark-DNS handles container DNS internally. For a single connection, pasta hits 1,699 req/s while slirp4netns hits 1,148 req/s. At 32 connections, slirp4netns hits 28,931 req/s while pasta hits 15,166 req/s. Most network issues come from missing configuration instead of missing capabilities. For long-running services, the 25-30% startup overhead of rootless mode is irrelevant. Podman averages 340ms for container starts, while Docker averages 355ms.
Podman is free.
The Real Cost of Docker Desktop
You know how much a license audit hurts your budget. Docker Desktop is not free for companies with more than 250 employees or $10 million in revenue.
| Tier | Price per User (Annual) | Max Users |
|---|---|---|
| Pro | $9 | 1 |
| Team | $15 | 100 |
| Business | $24 | Unlimited |
The price hike for the Pro tier was an 80% increase. We converted Compose stacks into Quadlet units for systemd integration. This translation took one day per host. The containers now use native systemd units. We spent an afternoon per host auditing socket-dependent tooling. One monitoring agent had a Podman-compatible path, but another required replacement.
The results were clear.
Deployment Workflows
I suggest you use Podman on servers and Docker on laptops. This strategy keeps developer velocity high on Mac and Windows. Podman 6.0.0 removed legacy cgroups v1 and CNI support. Podman works well for CI/CD pipelines and security-sensitive environments. Will Podman’s single-threaded pasta backend eventually become a bottleneck for high-concurrency clusters?
Podman is free.
