Zed’s performance edge and pricing logic

Zed offers a high-performance alternative to VS Code and Cursor with a 180ms cold start and token-based AI billing. This analysis compares Zed's usage-based costs against VS Code and JetBrains Fleet for enterprise teams.

Speed and the cost of tokens

Zed achieves a 180ms cold start. VS Code takes 2.1 seconds. Cursor is slower at 2.4 seconds. Zed wins on speed. I see the advantage of 8ms keystroke latency over Cursor’s 22ms. Zed uses 142MB of idle RAM. This is much less than the 730MB used by VS Code or the 920MB used by Cursor. Zed uses a native architecture to avoid the lag that Electron-based editors experience on large monorepos. You know that speed matters when working with massive files. DevToolReviews gave Zed a 9.2 for developer experience, which is higher than Cursor’s 8.7. When weighting AI more heavily, Cursor scored 9.4 and Zed scored 9.1. Zed’s usage share is 7.3% among developers in the Stack Overflow survey. This is lower than Cursor’s 18% and VS Code’s 75.9%. Anysphere, the company behind Cursor, closed a funding round in July 2026 that pushed its valuation to $50 billion. This follows a $900 million round in mid-2025. Zed’s pricing for AI remains tied to actual usage rather than flat fees. If a team moves to Zed, they avoid the high costs of fixed subscriptions because Zed’s token-based billing only charges for the text your prompts and responses actually consume at the provider’s list price plus 10%.

Zed Pro provides a two week free trial. This trial includes $20 of token credits. Claude Fable, Claude Opus, and GPT Pro models do not work during this trial.

Administrative control and orchestration

Zed Business provides admin controls over AI features and data sharing policies. It also allows unified billing across every seat. This tier has no minimum seat requirement. Admins can restrict or disable Zed-hosted AI models by model. They can also turn off Edit Predictions org-wide. VS Code allows IT admins to manage extensions via Microsoft Intune or Active Directory. Organizations can also host a private extension marketplace. VS Code has 55,000 plus extensions in its marketplace. Administrators can specify which extensions are allowed by publisher or extension ID. VS Code supports device management solutions like Microsoft Intune to deploy these policies. JetBrains Fleet uses a distributed architecture to separate the UI from backend processes. It provides built-in collaboration without third-party tools. JetBrains Fleet is a commercial product that requires a subscription. Fleet has a newer platform. It has a learning curve. Fleet switches between lightweight editing and full IDE functionality using smart mode and text mode.

Calculating the development cost

Zed is free.

Zed scales with usage. VS Code is free. GitHub Copilot adds a recurring expense. JetBrains IDEs cost between $50 and $90 per user for organizations. Cursor has a $50 billion valuation. Cursor’s pricing meters actual model usage. Zed’s usage share is 7.3%. JetBrains IDEs can safely rename a method across a codebase and perform complex structural refactoring. This capability is more comprehensive than the refactoring found in VS Code. VS Code relies on the TypeScript language server or various extensions for refactoring. JetBrains AI Assistant provides built-in code completion, chat, and refactoring suggestions. For developers using VS Code, GitHub Copilot provides access to models from Anthropic and OpenAI. JetBrains provides free licenses for students and open-source maintainers.

Feature Zed (Business) VS Code JetBrains Fleet
AI Model Control Yes Via extensions Built-in

Base Price Free $0 Subscription
Deployment Self-serve Managed via MDM Subscription

Will Zed maintain its niche as AI models become even cheaper?

The total cost for a 20-person team using VS Code with Copilot Business is $380 per month. This is less than the $900 per month for 20 Visual Studio Professional seats.
