Choosing between Tilt and Okteto for Kubernetes workflows

Tilt offers complex local rebuild loops using Starlark configuration, while Okteto provides remote development containers that sync code directly to a cluster. Teams with heavy microservices stacks may prefer Okteto to avoid the overhead of managing local clusters like kind or minikube.

I select Tilt when I need to run complex arrangements of jobs or add tools like databases around the edges of my services. Tilt watches for file changes, rebuilds containers, and redeploys them to a local cluster. You probably already know that managing local Kubernetes clusters like kind or minikube adds overhead to your daily workflow. If your team finds this setup too heavy, Okteto is a remote alternative. Okteto syncs local code changes directly into a running container in a remote cluster, which allows changes to appear in the cluster immediately without a full rebuild of the image. I find that Okteto works best for teams with simple service topologies that want to avoid local Kubernetes. The Okteto workflow mirrors your local filesystem into a pod when you run the okteto up command.

Tilt mechanics and configuration

Tilt uses a Starlark configuration file called a Tiltfile to define build and run logic. This Python-like syntax allows for complex logic, such as integrating with Bazel builds. The Tilt web UI monitors service status, logs, and errors for every service. You can configure debug settings in tilt-settings.yaml to run providers with Delve and port forward the server to localhost. For example, setting port: 30000 allows you to debug the core CAPI controller in Visual Studio Code or IntelliJ. You can also set profiler_port to enable the profiler or metrics_port to port forward to the default metrics port. Tilt supports different build engines, including Docker and Podman. If you use a local registry, you must specify a default_registry in your settings. You can also set allowed_contexts to limit which kubeconfig contexts Tilt uses. For testing, you can use the deploy_observability field to install tools like Grafana, Loki, or Prometheus. This feature requires the helm command to be in your path. If you want to automate rebuilds, you set the trigger_mode to auto, but you can set it to manual to trigger rebuilds through the UI. For those who prefer JSON, a tilt-settings.json file works, but YAML is preferred if both files are present.

Comparing the developer experience

Okteto creates preview environments for pull requests. It deploys a complete environment for a branch and shares a live URL with reviewers. You drive this setup with an okteto.yaml file per repository. I would skip Tilt if your microservices stack is too heavy to run on a single developer laptop. Tilt is better for teams that want fast local rebuild loops and are comfortable with local Kubernetes. Tilt moved into maintenance mode after its acquisition by Docker, so active feature development has largely stopped.

Tool Deployment Setup Effort Cost
Tilt Local Medium Free
Okteto Remote Low Free tier + paid

Okteto provides development containers that mirror production configurations. This allows you to code in your IDE while the running service in the cluster reflects your changes. Which tool provides better long-term stability for growing teams?
