Deploying with DigitalOcean App Platform

DigitalOcean App Platform offers managed container deployment from GitHub, GitLab, or Bitbucket. It provides built-in VPC, internal service routing, and a global CDN, with shared 1 vCPU instances starting between $10 and $12 per month.

Deployment choices for modern teams

DigitalOcean App Platform manages infrastructure, runtimes, and dependencies for teams that push code from GitHub, GitLab, or Bitbucket. You can also deploy via container images. Heroku provides a different model using "dynos," which are isolated Linux containers. While Heroku manages the runtime for languages like Node, Java, and PHP, AWS Amplify acts as a Backend as a Service to help developers build full-stack applications with Amazon infrastructure. Teams using Amplify can use tools for React, Angular, and Flutter. Heroku allows the use of buildpacks to automate deployment steps.

DigitalOcean App Platform provides developers with a managed environment where they push code from repositories or container images to handle the build, deployment, and scaling processes without ever having to manage the underlying server hardware themselves. This platform differentiates itself from Heroku by including VPC, internal service routing, and cloud firewalls at no additional cost. Heroku charges custom pricing for Private Spaces to access these features. DigitalOcean includes a global CDN backed by Cloudflare for static assets, but Heroku users must add an AWS CloudFront Edge add-on starting at $0.007 per hour.

DigitalOcean Gradient AI handles the AI lifecycle through Kubernetes with GPU nodes and managed databases. Heroku focuses on managed inference APIs for curated models, but it lacks native infrastructure orchestration for GPUs. For embedding storage, DigitalOcean uses managed databases like Postgres, while Heroku uses Heroku Postgres with pgvector. AWS Amplify provides advanced machine learning and artificial intelligence capabilities. It allows developers to build the backend of a full-stack serverless application with cloud resources from the BaaS and the frontend with single-page frameworks.

Resource management and pricing

DigitalOcean uses modular pricing where you select container sizes based on your specific application requirements. Shared CPU instances work for low-traffic websites, blogs, or discussion forums. Dedicated CPU instances support applications with higher performance needs like ecommerce, SaaS, or AI/ML workloads. You can only use autoscaling with dedicated instances.

Component Specification / Cost
Free Tier (Static) Up to 3 apps, 1 GiB transfer
Shared 1 vCPU / 1 GiB RAM $10 to $12 per month
Dedicated 1 vCPU / 0.5 GiB RAM $29 per month
Development Database $7 per month (512 MiB PostgreSQL)
Dedicated Egress IP $25 per app
Bandwidth Overage $0.02 per GiB

Heroku pricing for a Standard 1x dyno starts at $25 for 512 MB RAM. In contrast, a DigitalOcean shared container with 1 vCPU and 1 GiB RAM costs between $10 and $12 per month. For high-concurrency needs, Heroku Performance L costs $500 per month per dyno. AWS Amplify follows a pay-as-you-go model. For static web hosting, Amplify charges $0.01 per minute for builds and $0.023 per GB for storage.

The free tier benefits small projects or portfolios. It allows up to 3 static site applications at no cost. Each application includes 1 GiB of outbound data transfer per month. Users also receive automatic HTTPS and access to a global CDN. DDoS mitigation comes included with this tier as well.

Workflow constraints and limitations

The platform has limitations that impact engineering workflows. App Platform only supports GitHub as a deployment source. Teams that use GitLab or Bitbucket for version control cannot use App Platform without migrating their repositories. The managed database support within the App Platform workflow only includes PostgreSQL. If you require MySQL or MongoDB, you must provision separate DigitalOcean Managed Databases. The development database in App Platform has 512 MiB of RAM. It only supports PostgreSQL and resides in the same region as your application. You cannot migrate this database to another region, and it is not backed up by default. If the application is destroyed, the development database is destroyed with it.

App Platform does not include a built-in CI/CD pipeline. You must connect external services like GitHub Actions or CircleCI to run tests or manage staged rollouts. Application-level observability also requires third-party tools like Datadog or New Relic because the platform only provides basic metrics through the control panel.

DigitalOcean provides native n8n template support for workflow automation and OpenClaw deployment support for running production-grade AI agents. You cannot attach the same dedicated egress IP addresses to multiple apps because App Platform assigns dedicated IPs to each app individually. You cannot forward logs from dedicated egress IPs. You might already know that App Platform supports remote MCP server deployment to host AI tool servers with streaming and subdomain routing. How do the costs scale when adding multiple dedicated egress IPs to a single application? Teams needing low-cost, managed container deployment from GitHub should select DigitalOcean App Platform.
