How To Connect Ethernet To Macbook‍

Kelly Barrett by Kelly Barrett
How To Connect Ethernet To Macbook‍

The Macbook is a great computer, and it’s even better with a few modifications. Ethernet connectivity on your Macbook isn’t something you see every day, but that doesn’t make it any less useful. In fact, for some people who work from home or have another setup where an internet connection isn’t readily available, having Ethernet can actually be more convenient than Wi-Fi. Luckily, all you need to add Ethernet connectivity to your Mac is the right cables and a bit of know-how. This article will teach you how to connect Ethernet to your Macbook.

How To Connect Ethernet To Macbook?‍

  • First, you need to make sure that your laptop is turned on.
  • Then, you have to locate the Ethernet port on your laptop. This can be found in the back of the laptop and looks like a small rectangle with 8 pins inside of it.
  • Once you have located the Ethernet port, simply plug one end of the Ethernet cable into the Ethernet port on your laptop and plug the other end into an available Ethernet port on your router or modem.
  • Once this is done, open up a web browser and type in 192.168.1.1 (this is usually the default IP address for most routers) into the address bar and press enters on your keyboard or click go in some browsers (depending on what browser you are using). You should now see a page that asks for a username and password; this username will vary depending on what router/modem you are using so if you do not know it, contact your ISP support about this information (if it is not listed in their documentation). If you do know it, however, simply enter it into both fields and then hit enter/click go again to log in to your router/modem settings page where you can change some advanced settings such as assigning IP addresses to devices connected via ethernet ports or wireless connections (if applicable).
  • Once you have logged into your router/modem settings page, find the tab labeled “LAN” and then click on it.
  • Then, locate the option called “IP Address Assignment” and change it from “DHCP” to “Static.”
  • After that, hit the “Save” button found at the bottom of the screen and then close out of your browser window (or tabs if you were using multiple tabs to get into your router/modem settings page).
  •  Now, you should be able to access the internet using your laptop on the Ethernet connection.
  • If you want to connect more than one computer to your router/modem connection, you will have to repeat steps 1-8 for each computer that you want to connect.
  • Additionally, if you are connecting a laptop to a desktop computer and need the laptop ethernet port to be able to transmit data faster than 10 megabits per second (Mbps), then you will have to go into your laptop’s BIOS settings and change the boot order so that the Ethernet port is listed before the wireless adapter (if applicable).
  • Finally, if you are using a laptop with a built-in wireless adapter and need to connect it to your router/modem connection via an Ethernet cable, then you will have to either purchase an external USB wireless adapter or use one that is already built into your desktop computer (if applicable).
  • If you need further assistance, please contact your ISP support; they should be able to help you configure the settings on your router/modem.

What You’ll Need To Connect Ethernet To Macbook?

  • Macbook Pro with Ethernet port (preferably a newer model)
  • A computer with an Ethernet port
  • An Ethernet cable (preferably a crossover cable)
  • An Internet connection via Ethernet
  • A router/modem with an Ethernet port that is connected to your ISP modem/router via ethernet cable
  • A router/modem with an Ethernet port that is connected to your ISP modem/router via ethernet cable
  • A laptop with a wireless adapter
  • A laptop with a built-in wireless adapter and an Ethernet port (preferably a newer model)
  • An Internet connection via Ethernet (preferably a faster one than the one you would get from your ISP)
  • A computer with an Ethernet port that is connected to the Internet via Ethernet
  • A computer with an 802.11g or 802.11n wireless adapter (preferably a newer model) and a built-in wireless adapter that is connected to the internet via 802.11g or 802.11n connection

Tips for using Ethernet on your Macbook

  1. Use an Ethernet cable to connect your Macbook to your router or modem. You can use the Ethernet cable that came with your Macbook, or you can buy another one if you want.
  2. Connect the USB-C adapter to the USB-C port on your Macbook and plug the adapter into a power outlet. Make sure that you have enough charge in your battery for this step.
  3. Connect the other end of the Ethernet adapter to an available Ethernet port on your wall or router/modem.4 . Once everything is connected, open System Preferences and then click on Network. You should see a new network called Ethernet. Click on it and make sure that it’s checked. If it isn’t, check it and then click Apply.
  4. Open Safari and you should be able to connect to the Internet. If you can’t, try restarting your Macbook. If that doesn’t work, check your network settings again.
  5. After you have connected to the internet, you may have to log in to your router or modem with a username and password in order to access the Internet. If that is the case, don’t worry! You can still access the internet without having to remember any login information. All you need is the IP address of your router or modem.
  6.  o find out your router or modem’s IP address, go into System Preferences and click on Network. You should see a new network called Ethernet. Click on it and make sure that it’s checked. If it isn’t, check it and then click Apply. Click Advanced at the top of the screen. Choose TCP/IP tab at top of the screen and then click on Renew DHCP Lease button under the DHCP server section at bottom of the screen. This will give you a new IP address for your Macbook. Write down this address because this is what you need in order for other devices on your network (like smartphones, tablets, etc.) to access the Internet through your Macbook!
  7. Now that you have all of this information, go back into System Preferences Network choose Ethernet from the list in the left column click the Advanced button at the top left if there are any entries under the DNS Servers section click on + (plus sign) to add DNS server information and then type in your routers IP address if there are any entries under WINS Servers section click on + (plus sign) to add WINS server information and then type in your routers IP address.
  8. Now that you have the proper DNS and WINS information for your router or modem, you can go ahead and close System Preferences Network. Open Safari again and test to see if you can visit any popular website. If you get an error message saying “Unable to Connect” then it means that you didn’t enter the correct DNS or WINS information. You may have to call your Internet Service Provider (ISP) for this information, so be sure to ask them for it before you call!

Conclusion

If you’re concerned with data security, Ethernet is actually a much more secure method of connecting to the internet than wireless. This is because you’re connecting directly to your modem with a cable rather than connecting to an unsecured router. With that being said, it’s worth noting that Ethernet is only slightly more secure than Wi-Fi. Overall, Ethernet is an incredibly useful feature and is great if you want to be connected to the internet but don’t have access to Wi-Fi nearby.
