1Password leads enterprise passkey adoption despite price hikes

Price shifts reshuffle the manager market

Bitwarden raised its Premium tier to $19.80 per year in January 2026. This price hike follows a decade of flat costs. 1Password increased its Individual plan to $47.88 annually in late March. These two price hikes moved the competitors further apart. Proton Pass cut its Plus plan to $1.99 a month.

Bitwarden remains cheaper.

Can companies justify these rising costs?

You already know that higher prices often follow feature updates. 1Password has no free tier. Bitwarden remains the cheapest paid personal plan at $19.80 a year. Bitwarden has surpassed 15 million users and 80,000 businesses worldwide. 1Password serves over 180,000 businesses and has 30 million users. CommandLinux market tracking in July 2026 put Bitwarden narrowly ahead of 1Password in overall U.S. password-manager market share with 8% versus 7%. The free-tier battle between Proton Pass and Bitwarden remains intense. Bitwarden’s free plan offers unlimited passwords and devices but no longer includes integrated TOTP or file attachments. Proton Pass offers ten hide-my-email aliases on its free plan and allows passkey sync.

Security architectures and passkey deployment

1Password uses a dual-layer protection system called 2SKD. This system combines a master password with a 128-bit Secret Key. An attacker needs both to decrypt the vault. Bitwarden uses AES-256 in CBC mode with HMAC for authentication. It also supports Argon2id for key derivation. Both tools use AES-256 encryption. 1Password uses AES-256-GCM, which verifies data integrity during decryption. Bitwarden allows users to switch to Argon2id in their settings.

1Password focuses on the user experience for passkeys. The company works with the W3C to develop new specifications. Passkey adoption in enterprises is high. The FIDO Alliance reported in 2025 that passkeys achieve a 93% login success rate. This outperforms the 63% rate for other methods. This data includes performance from Amazon, Google, Microsoft, PayPal, Target, and TikTok. NIST SP 800-63-4 classifies synced passkeys as meeting Authenticator Assurance Level 2.

Adoption rates differ.

Bitwarden’s GitHub presence includes 13,000 stars for its client repository and 19,000 stars for its server repository. 1Password provides 1GB of storage for users. 1Password uses a single-key derivation model for its master password but requires the Secret Key for new device access. Bitwarden relies on new device verification via email. 1Password developers work on the Credential Exchange Protocol to improve passkey portability between providers.

Enterprise SSO and administrative control

1Password Business costs $8.99 per user per month when billed annually. It includes SSO integration with Okta, Entra ID, Google, and JumpCloud. 1Password reports 85% employee adoption within 30 days of deployment. Bitwarden Teams costs $4 per user per month. When comparing a team of 50 users, 1Password Business costs $5,394 per year, which creates a massive $2,994 annual difference when compared to the $2,400 per year price for Bitwarden Teams in 2026. For a 15-person team, 1Password Business costs $1,618 per year while Bitwarden Teams costs $720 per year. For teams with fewer than 10 users, 1Password offers a Teams Starter Pack for $24.95 per month.

1Password wins on polish.

The 1Password admin console manages user access and vault permissions through 12 custom groups. Administrators use it to enforce security policies and view audit logs. 1Password Business also includes a free Families account for every employee. This account has a $71.88 annual value. 1Password includes 20 guest accounts with its business plans to help with sharing credentials with third parties. Bitwarden uses Bitwarden Send for temporary sharing. 1Password provides 24/7 support through email, forum, or social media. Bitwarden does not offer live chat or phone support. 1Password’s automated provisioning requires no SCIM bridge to maintain. 1Password also allows admins to stream events to SIEM tools like Splunk and Sentinel via its Events API.
