Linode vs Vultr: Which developer cloud wins in 2026?
Vultr leads in price-per-resource with 200MB of RAM per dollar on 16GB plans, while Linode leverages Akamai integration and the RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Server Edition for high-performance AI inference.
Vultr wins on price-per-resource.
Vultr provides a $2.50 per month entry point for 512 MB of RAM. I find Vultr wins on price-per-resource for small projects. Vultr provides 200MB of RAM per dollar for 16GB plans, while Linode provides 166MB of RAM per dollar. Vultr’s Cloud Compute High Performance AMD instance in Silicon Valley delivered a single-core score of 1,926 on YABS, which exceeded the 1,343 score I measured on a $24 Linode Shared CPU plan in Chicago.
Vultr scales cheaper.
| Feature | Vultr | Linode (Akamai) |
|---|---|---|
| Starting Price | $2.50 | $5.00 |
| Datacenters | 32 | 41 |
| Managed Databases | Yes | Yes |
| Bare Metal | Yes | Yes |
| Windows Servers | Yes | Yes |
Vultr’s compute lineup includes Shared CPU and Dedicated CPU. Shared CPU tiers include Regular Performance, High Performance, and High Frequency. High Frequency instances use 3GHz+ Intel processors and NVMe storage. Dedicated CPU tiers include General Purpose, CPU Optimized, Memory Optimized, and Storage Optimized. Vultr provides managed Kubernetes and managed databases like MySQL and PostgreSQL. Vultr’s 4k random IOPS reached 118k, which exceeded the 94.5k IOPS I measured on Linode. Vultr’s 4GB plan is $20 with 2 vCPUs and 80GB of SSD. Linode’s 4GB plan is $24 with 2 vCPUs and 80GB of SSD.
Akamai scales Linode globally.
Akamai expanded its cloud presence to 41 locations in 36 cities. This follows the 2022 acquisition of Linode. Akamai uses Linode’s infrastructure to integrate compute, content delivery, and security services. The Akamai Inference Cloud launched in October 2025. It uses the RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Server Edition with 96 GB of GPU VRAM per card. This hardware delivers 1.63x higher inference throughput than an NVIDIA H100.
The edge network grows.
Linode provides a marketplace for one-click app deployments. It also provides the App Platform for container-based deployments. Linode includes LKE for Kubernetes. You can also use Akamai Functions for serverless compute. Linode remains the only service I know that allows you to downsize a VM. If you need high-performance AI inference, you should consider the Akamai integration.
Will Akamai continue to prioritize these edge use cases over traditional VPS users?
Reliability trade-offs for developers.
Vultr’s performance varies by region. I noticed network throughput in Tokyo differs from New Jersey. Vultr also charges per gigabyte for bandwidth overages. This creates unpredictable bills. Vultr’s Cloud Compute uses local SSD storage with no replication.
You should know that Vultr’s 16GB RAM plans are $128 for some configurations, whereas Linode is $96.
Linode’s fraud detection system causes account creation problems for new users. Vultr is not beginner-friendly due to aggressive security measures. Vultr provides 32 datacenters globally. Its new Milan, Italy region opened during Milan AI Week 2026. This region includes Vultr VX1 Cloud Compute. Vultr’s VX1 tier is designed for price-to-performance efficiency. It bills on actual hours. Linode’s Shared CPU plans include bundled monthly outbound transfer. Linode’s Dedicated CPU plans include bundled transfer that scales with plan size. Linode’s high-end GPU plans do not include bundled transfer. Linode’s support includes 24/7 ticket-based assistance. Vultr provides 100% uptime SLA for network and host node availability. Linode provides 99.99% monthly uptime SLA for compute services.
Vultr leads for performance-per-dollar.
