The shift toward containerized streaming in a post-VMware landscape

Enterprises are migrating from VMware to Kasm Workspaces to avoid massive price increases, such as the 1,050% annual bill hike reported by AT&T. This industry shift favors containerized browser streaming over traditional VDI to reduce hardware and licensing costs.

Broadcom ended sales of VMware perpetual licenses and support renewals on December 11, 2023. This change forces customers into subscription bundles like VMware Cloud Foundation or vSphere Foundation, which require a minimum of 16 cores per processor. One customer, AT&T, reported a proposed 1,050% annual increase in its VMware bill during a 2024 lawsuit. Because vSphere 7 reached end of general support on October 2, 2025, many organizations must migrate or renew with expensive bundles. These costs drive enterprises toward Kasm Workspaces, which earned a 2026 Gartner DaaS Leader placement. Kasm Workspaces provides containerized browsers and Linux desktops delivered via HTML5. Many IT teams now prefer physical hardware because the costs for server components, SAN storage, and NVIDIA licensing for GPU-heavy tasks like AutoCAD are too high. For 100 users, providing 300GB to 400GB of storage per Windows profile on enterprise SAN requires 50TB to 80TB of capacity, making VDI cost-prohibitive. For 5 AutoCAD users, the hardware cost for 5 Dell Precision laptops is much lower than the cost for 5 specialized VDI instances. The industry shift favors Kasm Workspaces for organizations needing to escape Broadcom’s pricing.

Evaluating Kasm, Parallels, and Citrix

Enterprises choosing between Kasm, Parallels, and Citrix evaluate total cost of ownership beyond simple license fees. Kasm Workspaces provides a free Community Edition with a five-session limit, while the Starter Edition costs $10 per named user or $20 per concurrent session monthly for deployments under 25 users. Managed Cloud Personal plans include a $10 option for Cloud Browser with 100 hours of use, a $20 option for Cloud Desktop with 200 hours, and a $40 option for Cloud OSINT. While Kasm Workspaces provides low-cost entry points through its Community and Starter editions, large-scale enterprises must negotiate custom quotes to secure professional support, managed egress, and additional branding controls for their deployments. You should verify if your team has the Kubernetes familiarity required for advanced Kasm deployments. Parallels RAS uses a concurrent-user subscription model, and CDW lists this at $193.99 per concurrent user per year with a 15-license minimum. Parallels DaaS also requires separate payments for Azure compute, Windows licenses, and bandwidth.

Feature Kasm Workspaces Parallels RAS
Primary Model Container-first / Browser-native AVD-based / RAS stack
Entry Pricing $10/user or $20/session ~$193.99/CCU/year (CDW)
Minimums None for Starter 15 licenses (CDW)
Best Fit Browser isolation / Linux Windows-centric VDI

Kasm users praise the ease of launching containerized apps and the lack of an endpoint agent. IT buyers describe Kasm as a simpler Citrix alternative with fast deployment via a single admin console. Kasm provides HTML5 access, printing, and MFA/SAML options for various device types. Parallels RAS migration from Citrix or RDS often consumes significant project hours for application packaging, profile strategy, and printer or USB validation. Parallels also includes Secure Gateway and HALB in its single all-inclusive edition. Kasm supports Windows 10, Windows 11, and Server 2019 through its RDP and KasmVNC protocols. Kasm also uses Docker Verified Publisher images. Kasm support is 24/7 on paper, but public ratings remain inconsistent. Kasm’s company-level Trustpilot rating remains very poor.

Security controls and deployment shifts

Security teams treat the browser as a controlled data path to enforce policies at the point of application use. Traditional desktop virtualization fails distributed workforces because network distance and variable bandwidth make the control layer feel slow. Local browser-based access improves responsiveness and enables clean-desktop controls and data boundaries. Security professionals identify applications and records that require copy, paste, download, or transfer restrictions inside the browser session, not just at the device level. Kasm provides disposable, non-persistent sessions which reduce the endpoint recovery burden after malware events. Parallels DaaS keeps VMs and session data in the customer’s Azure subscription to maintain data residency.

The migration from legacy VDI to containerized streaming involves significant operational shifts. Moving from VMware to other hypervisors requires rewriting PowerCLI scripts, templates, and provisioning workflows. IT teams must also manage the transition of user profiles, application compatibility, and image management. Even with the cost savings of Kasm’s concurrent-user economics, total spend increases with infrastructure for self-hosting and higher concurrent demand. Does the reduction in hardware costs truly offset the labor needed to manage containerized environments?
